Transitioning Your Pup to Fresh Food: A Gentle Guide

September 1, 2026 · The Wag & Willow Family

Slow and steady wins

A sudden diet change can upset any dog's stomach — even when the new food is better. The key is patience.

The 7-day transition

| Day | Old food | New fresh food | |-----|----------|-----------------| | 1–2 | 75% | 25% | | 3–4 | 50% | 50% | | 5–6 | 25% | 75% | | 7+ | — | 100% |

Signs it's going well

  • Healthy, formed stools
  • Normal energy and appetite
  • No vomiting or excessive gas

If things get loose

Don't panic — just slow down. Stay at the current ratio for a few more days before moving forward. Every dog's gut is a little different, and that's okay.

The goal isn't speed. The goal is a pup who feels good at every meal.

Once you're fully switched, you'll likely notice the changes within a couple of weeks: coat, energy, and that eager look at dinnertime.
